In ancient times the damau was used mainly alongside war instruments and in the naqqar-khanas (drum houses) of royal courts. Today it is a major folk instrument, played with wooden sticks (lankud) held in both hands. It contributes greatly to religious and other folk dances, and its support to the dhol's many rhythms is considered especially important.

Made of copper, it looks like a bowl about one foot across and eight inches deep, with a thick leather head stretched over its mouth.

The daunr, or damru, is a major folk instrument of Garhwal. It is usually made by hollowing out solid sandan wood, with goat skin stretched over both ends. One side is struck with a wooden stick and the other with the palm.

A bronze thali (plate) is played in rhythm with the daunr using a wooden stick, producing a deep, fierce and powerful sound — used mainly in jagar. Unusually among skin drums, the daunr is held between the knees rather than hung from the shoulder.
